Progress Report 2/25/19 – No Rest For The Wicked

I told OgreWare to rest. I TOLD them. But alas, Ogres don’t really listen.

We’ve gotten some initial feedback from people who have already downloaded Calling All Heroes – and, a BIG thank-you to those who have done so! – and the most common complaint was that it’s not clear how to play the game.

Whoops.

OgreWare, naturally, immediately jumped back on the work train and has started working on making the game clearer for non-gamers.

(So much for rest.)

So, what’s going to change: There is going to be an optional mini-tutorial, which should give new players an idea of the “flow” of the game. I’ve seen some of the initial in-progress versions, and it looks like it’s going to actually be pretty concise, but will still make the game’s structure much clearer.

But for those who hate tutorials and either know already how to play the game or just want to figure it out themselves, fear not – the tutorial is optional, and you can easily opt out at the beginning of the game.

I have to say, it’s really easy to make this common error – assuming that our creation makes sense to others just because it makes sense to us. I have, in the past, done the same things with comics and novels. They made sense to me, yes, but they partly made sense because I had the whole back-story figured out myself and had everyone’s storylines straight in my head. People who don’t have that wealth of information can’t understand the comics, so they end up very confusing.

While I don’t think Calling All Heroes is that unclear, it’s hard for even me to say for sure, since I’ve been part of this game’s development from the beginning. While I am not the creator, I also don’t have a totally “outsider” view, so I am perhaps not the greatest judge of whether the gameplay is intuitive or not.

Regardless, we should have the tutorial up soon, and the game will be a little more friendly to non-gamers. Stay tuned! And until then, if you’d like to play the game now, click here to get it on Google Play.
