This week’s progress was largely a continuation of last week, but with some enjoyable highlights. Merrix continued working on the dungeon generator, using the room editor he designed. The room editor provides an easy way for us to develop and save/load room designs, but what I think is most remarkable is that our dungeon generator is able to then use those rooms in generating an area. It might sound like a minor thing, but getting two homemade tools to play nice together can be a challenge. (Heck, it can be a challenge with two professional-grade tools!) But our dungeons now look a lot more like what we want, and the two systems seem to coexist and interact really well.
My adventure of interviewing our characters has yielded a lot of benefits. I’m “discovering” details I hadn’t thought about before, like the notion that the town healer, Granny, was once an adventurer seeking glory and gold. The Earth Mage is a bit of a patron of the arts and has an office full of sculptures, which mystifies visitors since the Earth Mage is blind. And the Barista and the Gardener get along well because, even though one is snarky and loud, and the other is quiet and shy, they appreciate each other for their forthright, no-nonsense manner.
Unexpected bits of backstory, details hinting at untold stories, and previously unknown partnerships: these are just a few of the things I’m unearthing this week. It feels slow, but it’s also helping a lot. And perhaps I shouldn’t worry about the speed. I wrote 17,000 words of character interviews and notes this week, so I guess that’s going to take time!
That’s about it for this week. Thanks for tuning in! We’ll have plenty to share next week, I’m sure, and we look forward to it – and we hope you will too.
