This time last year, I wrote the following in a journal:
“Feeling both hopeful and hopeless about us trying to do game dev again. I really want us to manage to do it, but it’s been so many failures in a row.”
We’d wanted to do game dev together for several years, and had been trying off and on through that time, without much success in keeping up with it. I was almost afraid to “try again in 2024” because, well, I’d heard it before. I’d said it before.
Despite those doubts, we set a project and the goal of establishing a strong habit of working an hour a day on the game. No other strict requirements, quotas, or deadlines (yet). Just a daily hour of game dev.
And somehow, we actually did.
I’m not sure yet what made it stick, but over the 364 days so far in 2024, we’ve done at least an hour of game dev every day, minus four days when I got pretty sick with covid. A year of consistent work has taught us a lot, and I hope to write more about it in the future, but today we’re just going to outline what we’ll be sharing here.
Because, now that we have the habit, what are we going to do with it?
Well, we’re working on our Current Project. During our year-long “build a habit” experiment, we made headway on this in several areas, and now that we’ve built the habit and gotten knee-deep in this chibi action RPG world, we’re going to dive in deeper by putting in more time and posting about it weekly on this blog. We’ll share work-in-progress screenshots, sneak peeks of new characters and zones, and a touch of behind-the-scenes of our work as a two-person indie dev team.
We hope you’ll tag along!
